T-Mobile Galaxy S2 receiving small OTA update, still ICS for now

The T-Mobile version of the Galaxy SII (S2) is receiving an update today, either via OTA or Samsung Kies, that keeps the device on Android 4.0.4 but brings a few needed fixes. The update, which can bring you to baseband version T989UVLI1 or T989UVLH1, is just 11MB when downloaded OTA and has a few fixes on board. Apparently a Qualcomm fix is included, along with other security enhancements and Vlingo S Voice improvements.

When first seeing that an update was available for the Galaxy S2 we instantly jumped to conclusions, thinking that this may be the Jelly Bean update. The update started rolling out for the international S2 yesterday, but unfortunately T-Mobile's model is on ICS for just a while longer. Have you received the update via OTA or Kies? Head to the forums and chime in, as some users are already reporting seeing the update arrive on their devices.

Buying a Galaxy S2, S3 or Note? Samsung’s offering cash for your old phone

If you're on the fence about whether to drop your hard-earned currency on a new Galaxy smartphone, Samsung Mobile USA is hoping to sweeten the deal with a option to take your old phone off your hands. On its official Facebook page, the manufacturer offers customers picking up a Galaxy S2, Galaxy S3 or Galaxy Note the option to exchange your aging handset for up to $300 in cold, hard cash.

If you've just upgraded to a Note, S2 or S3, you can head to the Samsung Facebook page linked below and enter the details of your old phone, along with proof of purchase for your new one. You'll then be given a quote for your old handset, which is valid if you send your phone off to Samsung within 30 days.

As is always the case with buyback schemes like this, you're unlikely to make back a huge amount of money on a year-old handset, and even a newer devices like the iPhone 4S will only get you around $250 back. Nevertheless, if your old phone is just sitting around collecting dust, and you don't want to deal with the possible minefield of selling on eBay, Samsung's new upgrade program might be worth a look.

Sprint’s Samsung Epic 4G Touch appears poised for Ice Cream Sandwich this week

Some good news for those of you patiently waiting for Ice Cream Sandwich on the Sprint Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, which until now has been little more than a "coming soon" line. We just got slipped this screen shot that points to it being released this week, starting Thursday and lasting through July 20.

If you've been rocking any versions of Ice Cream Sandwich to this point, you should be fairly used to the changes. If not, well, they're listed in the pic above. Don't expect too many UI changes, other than settings being rearranged -- after all, it's still running TouchWiz atop it. But the ICS update certainly will be welcome.

We do need to remind folks, however, that Sprint and Samsung don't exactly have the best history when it comes to updates. So until Sprint says it's coming, and until it's actually hitting devices, we'll remain cautiously optimistic.

Android 4.0.4 update for Galaxy S II available for some territories

Cast your mind back to the original Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Samsung Galaxy S II, and you'll recall that version was based upon Android 4.0.3. Now it seems Samsung's 2011 flagship is getting another update to push it up  to the more recent version 4.0.4. According to reports from SamMobile, the new 4.0.4 firmware has been finalized and is to start rolling out over-the-air and through Kies, starting with unlocked Russian handsets.

The new "XWLPM" firmware for the Galaxy S II (international version, GT-i9100) was built just a few days ago on July 5, and includes a new radio firmware, too. Keep watching Kies, and that software update menu, to see when your device is ready to be updated. Or if you're feeling brave, and absolutely must have that extra 0.0.1 version bump, you'll find an ODIN-flashable version over at the source link.

AT&T Galaxy S II Ice Cream Sandwich update available again via Kies

A quick heads up that the fine folks in our AT&T Galaxy S II forums are reporting that the phone's Ice Cream Sandwich update is available again from the Samsung Kies software. The update briefly went live last week only to disappear again; AT&T says it was just testing things. But now it appears to be ready and willing.

So fire up Kies, and hit the link below to see what everyone else is seeing.

AT&T: Just testing that Galaxy S II update; it’ll be back ‘very soon’

So the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the AT&T Galaxy S II kinda went live. Then it kinda didn't. And we've seen that happen wtih so many Samsung updates that we've kinda grown numb to it. But that doesn't mean we don't care. Here's the official word from AT&T corporate PR, which is a step or five over customer service chats.

We plan for the upgrade to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) for Galaxy S II customers to be live very soon.  Like with every OS update, we test it on our servers before we roll it out to customers.  We’re in the process of doing that with Android 4.0 (ICS) for Galaxy S II customers and hope to make that live soon.  We recommend customers wait to attempt the update.

So that's why you saw it, and now you don't. AT&T tells us it'll have more info at its consumer blog here once the update goes live. Hang in there, folks.

Rogers Samsung Galaxy S II LTE ICS update now available through Kies

As we're all looking toward the Samsung Galaxy S III, Rogers in Canada has managed to slip out the Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich update to the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE available on their network. Sadly, there is no OTA update to be found here though meaning, you'll have to fire up Kies on your computer to get the party started but overall that's a minor issue. Need to know the process for updating via Kies? No worries, head on over to the Samsung site using the link below. You'll see the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE SGH-I727R (Android 4.0.3) PDF available for download.

T-Mobile Galaxy S II Ice Cream Sandwich update now live in Samsung Kies

T-Mobile and Samsung have made the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Galaxy S II live and available via Samsung Kies. Because they have labeled this an "optional" update -- ICS brings a good many changes some may not like or want -- there will be no OTA firmware update. Yeah, we don't like Kies either, but what can you do?

Anyhoo, if you do want the optional update to 4.0.3, fire up Kies and follow the on-screen information to update to the latest available firmware. Besides all the goodness that comes with ICS, T-Mobile tells us there are enhancements to Wifi calling, the Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS), and enhancements to user voicemail. We're just glad ICS is finally here.

Hey, how about that. T-Mobile today on Twitter announced that its Galaxy S II will be getting an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich starting June 11. It'll be done via the Samsung Kies desktop application, which is a bummer. But it's better than no update at all. More on this developing breaking updating news as it develops.
